Very cool and vibey Guild X-50 made way back in 1957. The label states NYC, but from what I understand about Guild history, when they first moved across the Hudson, they used up their remaining labels, so there’s a good chance this is actually an early Hoboken build. There’s something about old guitars and their old wood that you just can’t replicate (did somebody say “Brazilian”?). A student guitar at the time, it is essentially Guild’s answer to the ES-125; lightweight laminate construction, 16” non-cutaway body, 24-¾” scale length. The old Guilds are right up there with Gibson in terms of quality, but way more affordable (you’d have to spend a lot more to get a comparable Gibson).
This guitar has a sought after Franz (or Fransch) pickup, which is essentially a crudely made low wind P90. It has a ton of character and sounds great; it’s easy to see why these pickups can sell for up to $1000 each. Brighter and twangier than a P90 with the knobs on 10, but roll the tone knob down some and you have a wonderful jazz tone
This guitar had some repair done to the binding on the body, but is otherwise all original. Has a medium-slim neck that is typical of Guilds of this era. Includes a non-original hardshell case.
The body size, neck, and scale length make it very comfortable to play on longer gigs. Great for jazz, blues, rockabilly, country, old school rock ‘n’ roll, you name it. It is a 65 year old guitar and, although it is in very good shape for its age, it's not cosmetically perfect. Any guitar, especially older ones, may require some time and potentially a setup to adjust to their new climate, especially during the colder months.Due to the Brazilian rosewood, USA shipping only.
