Hello fellow humans,

I am selling a left-handed vintage 1970s Fender Precision Bass. Ash body Walnut Mocha flavor. I bought this for my brother but he decided it wasn’t for him. I considered keeping it for myself but I’m a right-hand guitar player. Flipping the nut and restringing crossed my mind but I thought it unfair to deprive the lefty bassist community of this uncommon gem.

I believe it is a 1976. Weighs 8.4 lbs and ready to rock. Normal good player wear. The nut is the more narrow Jazz Bass width, which to my understanding, is desirable among bassist. I recently disassembled and reassembled it for date verifications/authentications and light cleaning. The neck and headstock decal are legit! Fender had some variations with the decals on lefty necks. I found pictures of another 1976 with the same decal placement and lack of “Precision Bass” that I could share with you. The neck, frets and fretboard are in fine condition with good action and intonation. Frets have life in them. Headstock has some nice natural finish checking I couldn’t capture on camera. You will see a small dowel on the back of the headstock. This is from the router pin at Fender and is on all vintage lefty bass necks. A few nicks here and there and a couple scratches as expected for a real player bass neck. The truss rod turns and works. There is currently a slight relief and it plays superb with some buzz here and there. The ash body looks to be an amateur sand/refinish with some rough spots and places along edges and curves where the old poly remains. Overall, the body is in great condition with the lines and contours fully intact. No extra holes drills or pickup routes. With basic sanding and prep the body is a great base for you to give it the Fender custom color nitro color finish of your dreams…or you could enjoy and rock it as is. Judging from the neck pocket and original finish stuck to the neck heel I am fairly certain this body was a three-tone sunburst. Judging from the patina and brass base plate the pickup looks original as does the pickguard. I’m not sure about the pots and knobs but will include pics for you to research. Bridge is solid and original steel saddles.

Here is the list of issues, non-issues, and miscellaneous notables starting at the headstock:

  • The G string tuner has a very slight bend in it. This does not affect its function and can be easily straitened with a vice. Like any good P bass, tuning is set it and forget it. Vintage single tuners are on eBay for about $50.
  • There is a hairline crack in the rosewood starting at the neck heel going up to the 15th fret. It really is a non-issue and not worth addressing unless you do a professional refret at some point down the line. The neck is solid. I imagine the crack happened at the factory from improper wood drying/prep.
  • There is a small shallow divot on the front of the body under the G string and above the knobs. I’d say from aggressive playing with a heavy pick before the body was sanded and refinished. I used the lighting in the pic to exaggerate it.
  • Some wood chipped away and one the pickguard screws near the knobs has nothing to hold. The screw currently lives in a thumb rest hole for safekeeping
  • The thumb rest and both chrome covers are missing. An amateur has doweled the bridge cover holes.

I’ll include an old beater bass case I’ve have in my garage for a while. Don’t expect a lot. It was a nice case clad in very California-esque stickers, but it is in disrepair. It is more than adequate for shipping, home storage and light gigging. I’ll get a proper shipping box from a music store and lots of packing material.

Let me know if you are Bay Area local to avoid shipping or want to purchase via eBay instead to use the PayPal Credit promotionals.

That’s everything I can think of to say. Please look over the pictures thoroughly. They are meant to supplement this description. I wish I played left-handed. This a great vintage instrument and would be great as a backup for gigging or a main whip for everything rock n roll. I’m leaving all the deep cleaning and infinitesimal setup adjustments to you. Please ask me absolutely anything you would like to know or pictures you want to see or measurements you want checked. I’ll go above and beyond to make you comfortable buying this guy. Also, while I know a lot about guitars/basses and proper maintenance, I am not a store or a vintage bass expert! Everything I have said is what I honestly and sincerely believe to be true or from what Google can give me. Anything I've stated factually incorrect is out of simple ignorance and lack of sufficient research. I’m not trying to hoodwink anyone. If you know something that contradicts anything I have claimed, please let me know and I will edit this post accordingly.

Thanks.

***ATTENTION*** 7.27.2015 I am going on vacation and will not be able to ship until about August 17th-18th. Communications may also be delayed till then. Thanks.*****
