Very nice banjoline (banjo-mandolin) bearing the following iron marks: Schutz Marke C.W.H.H. / D.R.G.M.; dating from the 1930s.
Schutz Marke signifies brand protection, while D.R.G.M. signifies that the product is subject to an "imperial petty patent".
The latter was effective between 1891 and 1952 in Germany.
This banjo-mandolin was certainly made in Germany in the 1930s, and features a rim as well as a tension system for the resonant skin, as seen on American open-back banjos.
Significantly less voluminous than the banjo-mandolins of the time, this banjoline is therefore quite rare and indicative of a quest for evolution in this hybrid instrument, which had just been born in France a few years earlier.
All in all, it's a fine historical witness to the evolution of the banjo-mandolin in Germany during those years, but also a playable instrument, fully and carefully tuned, with a low action and pleasant playing comfort.
So this banjoline will appeal to musicians, enthusiasts and collectors alike.
