We are one of the only facilities in the Pacific NorthWest that buys, sells and restores reel to reel tape decks. We have over 35 years experience working on these units, and have the tools and test equipment to properly align and bring these decks to life.
We use MRL calibration tapes, and are dealers for ATR tape. We work on everything from mono tube machines to 2" 24 track studio decks. We are reeltoreeltech dot com!
We stock many types of ATR tape from 7" reels to 2", in several formulations. We have about 350 decks in stock at all times. If you haven't yet checked out our website, please do so. Under the 'about us' tab we have a bunch of articles regarding the 'great barn finds' that we've come across this year, netting us well over 100 decks and tons of parts.
This is the Akai GX-280D 7" reel to reel tape deck dating from around 1973. We got this deck in on trade from a local customer that upgraded to a 10" Akai deck. It features 3 3/4 and 7 1/2 IPS speeds, the two most common consumer tape deck speeds, and 1/4 track operation, to play all standard consumer tapes. It will also play older mono tapes out of the left channel, if you want to listen to the 50-70 year old tapes made on the first generation tape recorders.
The deck has a 3 motor drive, which is far more reliable than the single motor decks of the day. The capstan is direct drive with a servo controlled motor, innovative for the time, and that brings the wow and flutter down significantly from idler wheel type of decks.
With a piece of foil on the end of the tape, the deck will switch into reverse play mode, playing Side 2 of the tape without you having to take the reel off the deck to flip it. Recording is only in the forward direction of the reel to reel.
As with all reel to reels, this one needed a bunch of servicing done.
-changing 1 of the LD-3141 chips with new old stock
-changing of the 2SC458 transistors that are known to go noisy
-replaced the pinch roller with a new one from Terry's Rubber Rollers
-adjust gains and frequency response to suit Maxell UDXL and new ATR MDS-36 tape, amongst others.
-test running of the deck for 12 hours to ensure long term operation.
Electronically, the deck is in great shape, and is flat to 20Khz at 7 1/2 IPS, and to about 12Khz at 3 3/4 IPS.
Cosmetically, the front panel is clean, however the wood cabinet has some marks on it as shown, and a few chips out of the wood veneer, pretty common for these decks.
The unit will be well packed for shipping, and will be insured for the full amount. Shipping down the West Coast will be somewhat less, and any excess will be refunded upon shipping.
