Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a Shure Brothers 730A model crystal cardioid microphone manufactured during the late 1930's through the 1940's and probably one of the most outrageous mic designs of all time. It was an ultra modern style with a sophisticated element being quite expensive and this was a model that was often used by Billie Holiday as seen in pic # 3.

This 730B comes with the lower Shure A88A "pull to talk" adapter that gives the mic a unique look as well as the built in cable in which to operate.

Pic # 2 shows this model in a n old 1940's era catalog I have along with it's basic specs. The 730 series mic was a very sophisticated crystal design with uni-directional characteristics and was superior to the modern common omni-directional crystal mics of the day. A wise choice to use where background noise could be an issue and this mic was very expensive despite being a crystal mic.

Shure often gave these mics a different model number most likely as these mics were often sold with other audio equipment. Normally it would be a 730A or 730B if sold just as is.

I really should start by letting you know that this mic lamp is made by a gentleman in Canada named Gord D Birtch who is a Jack of all Trades. An artist and all around good guy with an eye for these older mics. I have several of his mic lamps at my residence and have been collecting them for almost a year. I send him the microphones and he turns them into this finished product.

All of the mics are gutted, cleaned and professionally wired with high quality, efficient American L.E.D lights. Gord will often install metal mesh screen in his mics. Some do not have them but it really comes down to how the mic is designed and how we want the light to be thrown.

This 730B casts an amazing ambiance once activated as you can see in the pictures provided. It throws a lot of light and will really light up any wall or ceiling it's directed towards. You'll see in the pics provided how it looks. The light itself is not yellow or orange in nature. It's more white but will illuminate any color in the background nicely. A lamp you can certainly read a book next too. This will make an excellent accent piece anywhere in the home, studio or office and this mic lamp will screw onto any microphone desk or floor stand. I do have several vintage stands available in my Ebay store as well.

I'm just trying to get his name and recognition out there. His work is top notch. Again, I have several of his pieces in my residence and everybody who comes over absolutely loves them.

The 730B itself is in very nice overall physical condition. It has very lite wear in the satin chrome housing in the the form of fine pitting, scratches and very lite chrome loss. The front and rear grill are free of any dents or fractures and the mic has a nice luster still. The joint mechanism on this mic has lots of tension and works perfectly allowing you to tilt the head backwards putting light wherever you need it. A cable connector is attached to the A88A adapter as it would be naturally completing the effect of the mic.

The A88A adapter is just as nice as the mic and gives an extra 6 inches of overall height to the mic. The adapter shows almost no wear and still has the original lever on the handle that was once used to operate the mic when it still was used as a microphone. The A88A is an all metal design with a satin chrome finish and it can screwed onto any stand you have as it has the universal threading.

The cable itself is a high quality cloth covered item and has an older vintage feel to it. It's appx 9 feet in length and has an on / off switch as you can see in pic # 15. Simply plug this in and your good to go. I am told these quality LED's are rated at 50,000 hours.

This is an actual Shure Brothers 730B mic. Not a replica. I can't talk these lamps up enough.   More like sculptures and one of the coolest lamps you could own and perfect for that mid century vibe and an excellent gift for just about anybody.

This mic makes more of a statement once activated and an excellent gift for just about anybody.
