Read full description (which starts after the PAF info and after the shipping info) - only because I write A LOT of details.

Here is some informative details abot Gibson PAF pickup (in case you did not already know.

NOTE:  This is a PAF (Patent Applied For) Gibson pickup. There is a black rectangle shaped sticker with gold colored lettering that says PATENT APPLIED FOR is on the bottom side of the pickup.

Gibson PAF pickups do NOT have the Gibson USA imprint on the back plate.

Since this is a PAF pickup -- the spacing is 50 mm (which is 1.9685 inches // just under 2 inches).-- meaning that the distance of the pole piece screws (from the center of the low E pole piece to the center of the high E pole piece) is 50 mm.  See pictures # 6 and # 7.

  • A lot of people are not aware of this - but PAF NECK and BRIDGE pickups both have a spacing of 50 mm (see pictures # 6 and # 7). A majority of guitar players - put the hotter pickup in the bridge position. ONLY ONE pickup is for sale.
  • If you ever decide to put on a pickup cover - you will need a NECK cover - again the pole spacing is 50 mm (which is 1.9685 inches // just under 2 inches).

Up for grabs is ONE lightly used (generally clean w/ surface cloudiness, a couple of tiny nicks, and a few very short scratches) genuine Gibson 61 NECK Humbucker pickup.  ZEBRA (black / creme).  PAF.   Also known as (aka) '61 Burstbucker Zebra (BRIDGE Humbucker).

From 2014.    7.57k (close to full strength. The average DCR (output) for this model pickup is 7.74k.

If you want to install this pickup in the NECK positon -- you (or a guiatr tech) will (or might) need to lengthen the wires (by adding wires). This is because the lead length (main gray wire to the ends of the bare wires of the individual wires) is about 11 and 7/8 inches.

In person - the shade of the cream / black zebra color looks as it does in pictures # 1, # 2, and # 3. In most of the other pictures of the top sid eof the pickup - -- the color looks duller because I needed to take the pictures without the camera's flash (and / or is a certain) light to show the imperfections. And even though in reality - the top side of this pups does have imperfections (as seen in the pictures) -- some of the imperfections do not stand out as much in person compared to how they look like in the pictures (especialy if you look at he picup very up close). I intentionally took pictures # 9 to # 16 in a certain light at certain angles to show the imperfections

The model number (61) and part number (860-3178-L) on the label / sticker that is on the bottom side of this pick up is formally for a Gibson 61 NECK pickup.

  • It is not actually marked NECK. But 860-3178-L is the number for the NECK version of the Gibson 61 pickup
  • NOTE: as I have stated a few times - the lead length (main gray wire to the ends of the bare wires of the individual wires) is about 11 and 7/8 inches. Depending on the guitar that you install this pickup in - there might not be enough wire for installing it in the neck position. But it will be fine for the Bridge position.

Read information further below that I've provided about PAF pickups (maybe you do or maybe you do not already know this info).

NOTE: a NECK humbucker can also be called RHYTHM. Sometimes Gibsons marks (on the label on the bottm side) the NECK pickups a RHYTHM or RHY. This pickup does not have this info on the label. But if you see some Gibson '61 pickups that do - they are NECK.

Solder Connect. 4 conductor. Alnico V magnet.

Comes with screws & springs and a copy of the wiring diagram.,

----

NOTE: Techically this is a NECK position pickup - the pole spacing is for the NECK position (read info below). SEE pictures # 6 and # 7.

  • ( 50 mm (which is 1.9685 inches // just under 2 inches )

But as I stated above -- the WIRE MIGHT NOT BE LONG ENOUGH FOR THIS PICKUP TO BE INSTALLED IN THE NECK POSITION FOR SOME GUITARS (but you or a tech can lengthen the wires).

However if you are going to be pairing this pickup with another PAF pickup - it can be used in the Bridge position as long as the OUTPUT on the pickup that you are putting in Neck is not hotter than this pickup. But the '61 pickups generally have the same OUTPUT.

Only the ONE pickup (the one seen & advertised in this listing) is for sale.

==

But if you really wanted to put / install this particular (meaning the actual pickup for sale in this listing) Gibson 61 NECK Humbucker pickup (61, 860-31738-L) in the NECK position - then:

  • you (or a guitar tech) will (or might) need to extend the length of the wires (by adding wires) -- then it can be installed in the NECK position.
  • Extra wire(s) is/are NOT provided.

----

NOTE:  As I stated at the start of the description -- This is a PAF (Patent Applied For) Gibson pickup. There is a black rectangle shaped sticker with gold colored lettering that says PATENT APPLIED FOR is on the bottom side of the pickup.

Gibson PAF pickups do NOT have the Gibson USA imprint on the back plate.

Since this is a PAF pickup -- the spacing is 50 mm -- meaning that the distance of the pole piece screws (from the center of the low E pole piece to the center of the high E pole piece) is 50 mm.  See pictures # 7 and # 8.

  • A lot of people are not aware of this - but PAF NECK and BRIDGE pickups both have a spacing of 50 mm (see pictures # 5 and # 6).

Gibson '61 Zebra pickup: Tonal & Resonant Advancements:  Classic humbucker with slightly "unmatched" bobbin windings for vintage 60's era humbucker tone with enhanced highs. Unbalanced windings similar to the Burstbucker except with coil offset reversed. (Screw coil has slightly more winds than slug coil).Reversed coil offset designed to provide balance between coils, and still offer vintage, humbucker voice.

Detailed specifications about this model pickup are at the endo f the description.

Here are details about the 61 "NECK" pickup, screws & springs, and wiring diagram for sale in this listing.

I put it's conditon as Very Good - but some people might feel that it is in between VG and Excellent shape.

Even though this pickup is about 9 years old (from August 2014) and was lightly used - overall - for it's age it is clean (but NOT 100 % perfect).

TOP SIDE:

  • Please refer to the pictures # 9 to # 16 to see the imperfections on the top side. Some of these imperfections show up more in the pictures than they appear in person. Please review all of the pictures because not all of the imperfections appear in one picture.
  • Some very light not too long / not too short surface hair-line scratches, some cloudiness (which is surface wax), a few very small / shiny was surface spots, some tiny & very small nicks, and a few light very short dash scratches. Some of these imperfections show up more in the pictures than they appear in person.
  • I did not want to wipe off any surface wax to prevent scratching the top of the pickup or to not make the wax smear.
  • Some of these imperfections are from how the pickup was manufactured - esp the very short dash light scratches and the wax.

UNDER SIDE of pickup is mostly very clean. It has some surface wax residue that make it look like it has imeprfections. But most of the imperfections are on the surface wax: cloudiness, tiny & very small bumps (dot-like and short line-line).

  • Markings: the back side has small sticker that says "PATENT APPLIED FOR" and a bigger sticker that says:  "61, 860-31738-L, and 8/28/14"
  • The PATENT APPLIED FOR label is mostly fine. It has surface wax over it - esp onth elower left area.
  • The white label / sticker is fine / clean. It jsut has a very small nick to the left of the far left number 8 of the date

The pole screws are fine / clean.

The magnet pole slugs are fine / clean.

WIRE / LEAD: Mostly fine. NOTE: For some guitars -- the wire will not be long enough to install in the neck position. But you (or a guitar tech) can add wires to lengthen the wires. Extra wire(s) is/are NOT included.

The area of the outer gray wires near very cose to the back of the pickup has a white spot form being bent. SEE close-up picturs # 19. But this outer gray wire is fine and the inner wires are fine.

If you need to get acess to more of the individual colored wires - just pull down the outer gray wire covering and the metallic shielding.

  • Full length of Lead (wire): gray wire to the ends of the individual bare wires is about 11 and 3/8 inches
  • Length of main wire to the ends of the colored part of the individual wires is about 10 and 7/8 inches
  • Length of the gray part of wire is about 10 and 1/2 inches

The mounting screws are fine (actually they are new).  The screws heads are Phillips and and use a Phillips screw driver.

The springs are fine (actually they are new).

The Wiring Diagram paperwork is a printout copy. It is folded.

====

Gibson specifications state that the average DCR  (the output) for this pickup (new) is:  7.74k

Works fine / slightly lower than full strength.

7.57k is the multi-meter reading that I got on April 10, 2024. Room temp was about 68 °F. Remember that room temperature affects the multi-meter reading - so this reading fluctuates a little bit.

Do the following to get the multimeter reading:

  • tie (twist) green and white wires of the pickup together (but you do not need them to touch the multimeter. These wires are already twisted together (if necessary - you can untwist them)
  • tie (twist) black and bare wires - these are the GROUND wires [multi-meter black to black & bare (ground) wires of the pickup]. These wires are already twisted together (if necessary - you can untwist them)
  • red is by itself - this is the HOT wire [multi-meter red to red (hot) wire of the pickup]
  • select 20k ohms (or 200k ohms to get a less detailed reading).
  • As I stated above - I'll leave the wires twited together.

====

I took several pictures of this pickup. And there are a few pictures of the wire(s), of the screws & springs, and the wiring diagram.

Please message me with any questions.  Feel free to ask for more pictures.

NOTE: There are some imperfections that can be seen better in person than they appear in the pictures.   There may be a few imperfections that I overlooked in my written details.  And - there maybe some imperfections show up in the pictures that are not that visible in person: glares and dust specks).

This listing is for what is seen in the pictures and what is described in my description.

NOTE: If you need any other genuine Gibson parts [brand new, new open package, and / or used (various conditions)] -  just let me know - I might have what you are looking for. And I have some more pre-owned Gibson pick-ups that I will eventually list - but if you want to know about any of them sooner - again - please message me.
