The Ovation 1869 Custom Legend is an acoustic-electric guitar that falls into the top tier of Ovation’s bowl-back models. Here are some key details about this instrument:
- Construction: The 1869 Custom Legend features Ovation’s signature “roundback” design, which contributes to its unique sound and playability. This guitar has a shallow roundback
- Top Wood: It boasts a AAA Sitka spruce top, known for its resonance and clarity.
- Neck: The neck is crafted from mahogany/maple and has an ebony fingerboard.
- Bridge: A carved ebony bridge (a rare feature) enhances sustain and tonal response.
- Tuners: The guitar is equipped with Schaller tuners.
- Electronics: It comes with a bridge-mounted piezo pickup and the Op24 electronics, which include a volume control and graphic equalizer.
- Sound: The tone is described as crisp and sweet, and it sounds excellent when amplified.
This guitar very pretty guitar plays great, has sweet low action, and sounds excellent. The frets are good showing limited wear and the neck is finished flat and smooth. The bowl is shallow giving it an almost electric guitar profile making it extremely comfortable to play for extended periods of time. The electronics are the best that Ovation had available. Given its age, it has wear and tear:
- Dings in the face
- The quarter inch jack has some noise and probably needs to be replaced. I have been playing it with a XLR to quarter inch adapter which I will include.
- The top is flat and free from finish cracks common in older Ovations aside from one crack in the finish on the left side of the neck (pictured).
- The rosette has a few age-related cracks (pictured)
- The tuner works unreliably, and I don't recommend using it
