When I rebuild a solid body guitar I choose one that is good looking, and this Norma is all that. Norma was a made for and imported by Strum & Drum out of Chicago through the 1960s by Teisco Gen Gakki. There are dings, dents and chips all over it, but is in solid condition with no structural issues.
The neck is solid luaun with a perfectly functioning trussrod and nice rosewood fretboard. I gave it a fresh 12” radius, new Jescar 47104 frets, a new bone nut at 1-11/16” and added a fresh set of locking tuners. It is a Norma unique 23-3/4" scale and the carve is a very normal medium C / D that is very comfortable. The geometry is such that it fits a normal modern TOM bridge matched with the original tailpiece - the action is low, fast, easy and accurate.
The body is also solid luaun - not the typical plywood- and the pickguard is original, which I fit with pickups from a different Japanese guitar. These pickups are more of a Fender design with actual Alnico magnet pole pieces giving a full spectrum and warmer tone than the typical shrill pickups it had originally. Added are the 3-way switch and new pots, the rhythm/solo switch remains as the original tone cut… for nostalgia sake.
This is a lovely, easy playing and sexy guitar that is gig ready today.
