About This Listing

Here is a lovely 1920s Style 1 Weissenborn Hawaiian steel guitar. Weissenborns are known for their mellow and sweet tone, and this one really delivers on that front! Usually, the style 1 guitars were the plainest. However, as you can see this one uses a pretty spectacularly figured set of solid Hawaiian Koa wood.

Hermann Weissenborn was a German born luthier who relocated to Los Angeles and tried to capitalize on the "Hawaiian Craze" of the late teens and early 1920s. During this brief heyday, his hollow-neck Koa lap steels set the bar for resonance and volume and were among the first guitars built specifically for slide playing.

Due to his instrument’s popularity during the Golden Age of Hawaiian music, they will always be closely tied to that sound. However, in modern times renowned players David Lindley and Ben Harper put Weissenborns firmly on the list of must-own vintage guitars for a wide variety of sounds.

Overall Length: 37 1/4 in. (94.5 cm.)
Body Depth: 2 7/8 in. (8.3 cm.)
Lower Bout: 15 1/8 in. (38.4 cm.)
Scale Length: 25 in. (635 mm.)
Nut Width: 2 in. (50.8 mm.)

This stunning Weissenborn Style 1 is in great shape! It has all original parts, including a very rare original case in beautiful shape. A light clear coat of overspray protects the original finish. Light finish checking and age appropriate signs of use are present throughout. Two knot holes are filled on the back, and may be why this amazing set of Koa was used on a Style 1. There is a very slight belly, which is common on 100+ year old Hawaiian acoustics. There are two soundly sealed hairlines behind the bridge. The instrument plays perfectly in tune throughout, and sounds stunning.
