About This Listing

Fender Custom Shop Seymour Duncan Signature Esquire from 2006 in excellent condition with maple neck in 2-Color Burst with single-ply parchment pickguard.

I purchased this guitar in late 2023. I was told at the time that there were only 28 guitars made in this series, which was later confirmed by Fender customer service. The underside of the control plate is hand signed by Seymour Duncan himself, and the pickup has a custom shop engraved and numbered plate on the bottom. Interestingly, the pickup is numbered #42, so either they made more than 28 of these guitars or not all of the pickups were put in production. Apparently, Seymour Duncan supervised the pickup winding and wiring personally, so maybe he wanted to hold on to some of them. Also included is a 2006 Fender catalog featuring the guitar.

The guitar is very clean! There is a fair amount of finish checking (see images), which looks amazing in my opinion. The only blemishes I’ve noticed are:

  • a tiny finish chip just above the neck plate
  • small amount of wear on the fretboard in the first few frets (looks cool to me)

The neck is a nice C shape with a wide, 1.74” nut, and a 9.5” radius, which I found extremely comfortable. The pickup screams, and while it has that Tele character, I found it really likes to be driven hard.

Happy to answer any questions.

Esquire™ 3-way Switching:

You might be wondering why a single-pickup guitar would need a 3-way toggle switch. When answer this question you want to say that "it basically allows you to have three preset tones with the use of the switch".

In the bridge position the pickup is only connected to the volume control (the Tone control is disconnected). This minimal circuitry provides more top-end sparkle than a Telecaster®.

In the middle position the standard tone control circuit is activated and it functions just like any other tone control.

In the neck position the tone control is disengaged, but a tone-shaping capacitor is added that rolls off a lot of the top end and some of the bottom. This scheme produces darker tone along with a slight volume loss.
