About This Listing

Trem-Tone 1960s Tube amplifier. (Knox Model 104)

Branded by Kent, Knox, Howard

This amp puts the ga-rage in garage band. Serious mud box – if you don’t use 60 cycle hum as artistic expression and you don’t like gritty distortion as seen by artists such as Mudhoney, Butthole Surfers, Black Sabbath and others, then maybe this amp is not for you.

Otherwise read on. Yes its a “wee little amp” with a “wee little” speaker – The speaker itself looks pretty much new – cone intact as far as the eye can see. Speaker Code 6708 may indicate August 1967 for the speaker manufacturing date, which would put this amp at ‘67 or ‘68 for year of manufacture.

Volume wise this amp will not keep up at all in a rock band. Don't expect to rock it at a venue without significant mic and boost from the house system. You could use it solo, for practice, and certainly for any studio work, or for low volume jamming and collaboration it will be fine.

On/Off/Tone (one knob). Turn on the tone knob counter clockwise - “click” and move further counter clockwise for more treble as desired. Volume on zero.. good turn the volume up to 1-2 and you get some low volume clean – like bedroom volume. From there any louder and the 60cycle comes in - Halfway up the amp gets about as loud as it can -volume wise with some distorting depending on how loud your guitar vol is or how hard you hit the strings. From mid-way to “Eleven” yes -this amp has no numbers so I’m making a bold claim – turn it to 11 and its like you have a flipping tube screamer already on the thing (but its like “bedroom 11”)

No external speaker jack – “it’s a 60’s practice amp man” - I think you could hook up to another cabinet it if you are handy with wiring. Just measure the Ohms and match the load – if you don't know what this means, better dial a friend.

The tremolo works as expected. No foot switch is included for the tremolo. Just turn up the “strength” knob. The amp doesn't have much bass so the tremolo doesn't sound the same as maybe a classic Fender super or twin – you don’t have that depth, pushing air, but otherwise, it functions great and has a good speed range from spaghetti western to almost slap back echo speed.

Clean bill of health: This amp was just sent to the wonderful and talented amp techs at the “Solderhaus” here in the great northwestern town of Port Orchard. I do this with all of my amps – I send them to “amp retreats” where the amp has guided meditation sessions, a sweat in the sweat lodge, various cleanses , and a daily amp wellness regimen for up to three weeks, living on a healthy diet of solder and capacitors. Some caps were replaced, as well as the crusty old two prong AC cord. Topping off the visit was the installation of a brand new grounded 3 prong AC cord so this amp is now truly grounded after this retreat and is now ready to ROCK without the pesky risk of electrocution.

Get this sleeper while you can! I feel a little crazy for selling it actually. I'm just here playing it, so if it keeps growing on me, I might just keep it..

As always, free shipping and 2 week returns* if something doesn't match the description
