About This Listing

We go back in time to the year 1958. The Telecaster and Stratocaster dominate the guitar world on behalf of Fender, but Leo Fender would also like to reach jazz guitarists with a new model. At the NAMM of the already mentioned year 1958, Fender therefore presented its third model, the Jazzmaster. The guitar has a slightly mellower sound than the existing models, but is mainly distinguished by its spectacular offset body shape. The model is therefore marketed as the top model of the Fender catalog and is about to replace the Stratocaster.

However, the intended target group of jazz guitarists ignores the model in favor of the hollow body, but help comes from an unexpected source. Rock guitarists see the Jazzmaster as the ideal instrument for surf rock due to its different appearance and sound, and bands such as The Ventures and The Fireballs adopt the Jazzmaster as their weapon of choice for their performances.

Back to the present, to this fantastic Jazzmaster from 1962 in its current condition. Thorough research has taught us that the guitar is completely original, except for a fret performed in 2017. The guitar has the original pickups and electronics, with the potentiometers dating back to the 22nd week of 1962. The maple neck has a slab Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, for which CITES is included. The color of the guitar is striking, and there is an interesting story to be told about it!

The Jazzmaster was only supplied with a Sunburst by Fender, but Fender later provided the guitar with a Dakota Red finish over the existing Sunburst. Car paint was used for this, without the addition of a nitrocellulose clearcoat top layer. The lacquer does not glow green under a UV lamp, because this happens due to the aging of nitrocellulose.

The guitar has traveled its musical journey in an original 60's Fender Bulwin Eyeglass Case, a case that was widely used for offset models at the time. Inside the case are two badges from Webb's Music from Antioch, California. The previous owner imported the guitar from America himself, and to our great joy the guitar can now be admired in our beautiful store in Dedemsvaart!

Product Overview
Fender announced the Jazzmaster at the 1958 NAMM show as a high-end jazz guitar with an array of innovative features and sleek sports-car inspired curves. Though the model never really caught on with jazz players, it was quickly embraced by surf rock players due to its unique floating tremolo system and mellower sounding pickups. Later, the Jazzmaster would find new life as an iconic instrument for a range of indie rock players.
