I believe this Hondo banjo was made in the early 1980’s. It is all maple and has an 18-hole flat head tone ring with a tube-and-plate flange. It Is moderately heavy though slightly lighter than a typical Gibson flat head. I took this apart, cleaned all the metal and wood and set it up with a 3/4” Snuffy Smith bridge. The action is .125” at the fourteenth fret. It is loud and has the fat yet bright tone you would expect from a flat head tone ring. It is not a Mastertone, but it’s excellent banjo for beginners through intermediate players.
The banjo is in excellent condition overall with no visible fret wear, but I’ve listed it as very good because of the following: There is a crack in the top ply of the resonator on the fifth-string side. It does not reach the inside of the resonator. There are multiple cracks in the neck bindings, but the binding is complete and still firmly glued in place. There is one 3/8” scratch on the fifth-string side of the neck. Please see the photos to get an idea of these imperfections.
It comes with a Roadrunner hard shell case in excellent condition. No charge for the sweet QOTSA-inspired artwork.
