Up for sale is a killer and incredibly rare left handed 1979 Kramer DMZ 4001 Aluminum neck electric bass in excellent vintage condition and perfect working order. We just have this a pro set up with a set of 45-100 gauge strings so it plays amazingly with low action, accurate intonation and the original electronics sound exceptional. The two mini toggles give you lots of tonal flexibility as well. One is a split coil option and the other is some kind of EQ variation.
Cosmetically, this instrument is insanely clean and has been well taken care of over the years. There’s really not much to say here. There’s a couple of ding on the treble side of the body and on the bottom. Also, someone scratched some letters into the serial number plate on the back. In addition to those minor imperfections, there’s just some general swirling and light scratching in the clear coat from handling and cleaning. The original frets look great still with only a hint of wear on frets 1-5. This axe looks like it’s hardly been played. See pics for condition and please excuse any reflections.
As previously mentioned, this axe plays great with low action. More specifically, we set the action at 3/32nds at the 15th fret. There are no truss rods in these but fortunately the neck is pretty straight. That said, there is slight twist in the neck yielding more relief on the treble side of the neck compared to the bass side. And as a result, the top two strings (D & G) buzz a bit. Fortunately, none of this comes through when plugged in and it really plays great. And to be clear, it’s just fret buzz. All of the notes still ring through clearly and there are no dead frets of course.
We believe this instrument to be all original but that’s just our opinion. All of the other 4001s we’ve seen do not have the two mini-toggles switches seen here but they look stock to us. It seems possible that this was custom order given that you never see these pop up left handed.
Comes with the original hard shell case. The bass weighs 10lbs 4.6oz. The nut width is 1.58”. The neck thickness is .835” at the 1st fret and .940” at the 12th fret.
