About This Listing

A rare opportunity, to get one of Santos Hernandez' sought after guitars - they are doubtlessly the holy grail amoung the classical guitars!

Santos Hernández was born in Madrid in 1873. He is one of the luthiers trained by Manuel Ramirez, with whom he started working around 1905 to replace Enrique Garcia.
The famous guitar that Manuel Ramirez gave to Andres Segovia in 1912 was built by Santos Hernández. When Manuel Ramirez died in 1916, Santos continued to work for his widow for some time.
Santos soon opened his own workshop on la Aduana street, in the center of Madrid and started to build in his own name. He was known as a reticent and withdrawn man and he never had any apprentice. That's one of the reasons why the name Santos Hernández has become mythical. But it is true that his guitars really have a unique character: they sound very deep with a nice melancholic touch to their tone — something that can not to be found in the instruments of other luthiers.
How did he do it ? What magic made it possible to achieve such a sound ? In any case, this particular guitar, built in 1921, is endowed with these very specific qualities.

It has a nice spruce top and rosewood back and sides. The scale length is 650 mm and the nut width 51 mm.

The sound is rich, deep and has an almost "pensive" quality of sound supported by a solid, almost self-assured fundamental at the center of every note. It also has a beautiful loose, old-world feel to it. We love how the trebles sing on this guitar and how they create a wonderfull sound experience together with the huge basses. The sound has a nice vintage character with a great sustain.
Overall a very charming instrument that captures the essence of this great maker.

The guitar was in possesion of a professional musician and has been well taken care of. It has been very professionally restored and the frensh polish nicely refreshed. The tuners are the finest Fustero (Vintage style) tuners we have seen so far.

It comes with the original case and the certificate of authenticity (linked on our website).
