Washburn Tenor Banjo
1920s era tenor banjo acquired at the Brimfield Antique Market from a private seller. Washburn does not maintain accurate serial archives, but an expert (Jake Wildwood of Vermont) confirmed the brand and era, as well as the repairs that have occurred.
The Pros -
The instruments sports absolutely beautiful wood work and inlays, with one of the most unique neck wood grain patterns I’ve seen on an instrument.
The head was replaced in the 50s and an aftermarket tone ring was added. These repairs are still completely intact and add a lot of sustain to the instrument.
Full tone and sustain, especially for a tenor scale banjo.
The instrument is quite playable, action is low at about 1/4 inch at the 12th feet (pictured) and the neck is straight.
The Issues -
There is pitting on the frets, especially in the lower positions. For full playability, a refret is recommended.
The tuners have seized a decent amount and are extremely sensitive. the instrument can be intimated and will hold tune, but will most likely need repair.
There are a few nicks, scratches, and wear as expected on an instruments more than 100 years old (all pictured).
I received this instrument in a slightly oversized case. Will ship with case and pack professionally (strings slacked and bridge safely stored) to ensure safe arrival. Will need a minimal setup upon arrival. Reach out with any questions!
