About This Listing

I love this guitar! This is such a beautiful gem. Huge velvety tone with richness and complexity comes booming out of this small body acoustic, it sounds twice as big as it is. Message me for a video!

Back in the day Yamaha really laid the groundwork for the modern world of guitar production that we live in now. They innovated and introduced ways of producing guitars in large numbers that hadn’t been done before, so much so that factories around the world hired them as consultants to teach them their production methods. The result of all that innovation was a super nice guitar at a way lower price point than anyone else could deliver at the time. These were a lot of player’s first guitar that some people never even had the inclination to move on from because they were just so good. Elliot Smith played his same Yamaha FG-180 on every album he ever did and played it live at the Grammys and every show with just a basic soundhole pickup.

As an instrument, this thing totally rules. I absolutely love the sound. I think it sounds totally huge in a way that I can only describe as classic 70’s Yamaha tone which is definitely a thing. Very lush and harp-like midrange, very Topanga Canyon-era Joni vibes. It feels awesome, it’s an amazing songwriter and new ideas come popping out left and right. The action down in the lower register is literally perfect, it gets a little more challenging as it goes up but it’s not anything a-typical from Yamahas of this era. I love the way it plays up and down the neck, it definitely shines in the lower register as a Jeff Tweedy-type songwriter guitar but nothing is totally out of reach. The aesthetic condition is phenomenal, it could pass for a 5 year old guitar but it's pushing 60 years old. The saddle is all the way down, but it plays great just the way it is, it has some songs in it!Overall this is a fantastic player’s guitar, from the first open chord you’re totally hooked. Great guitar!
