About This Listing

Howdy all from Music Gear in Independence Missouri! Home to Gary the Gator! I'm pretty sure we are the only guitar shop in America with a 6 foot gator and this old Martin - come see them both!

Martin D-28 serial number 188155 with a modern hard shell case. This is guitar is special, single owner, it was a gift from his father and he has played it since 1960 - all the character is good honest gig wear and age from one guy. Per the owner is it had a bridge reset at Mass St Music and the pickup installed. Which are the only repairs / mods he mentioned.

From what I see past his description:

I would wager it has had a neck reset and fret work as well, but I'm not seeing evidence of a refret, myself. I did a black light test on our youtube channel if you'd like to take a look. On the sides there is a distinct line on both sides where the brown is lighter, which might be repaired sides and over spray. Also I found what could easily be a tape line on the back.

That all said, this is a vintage player, so look it over, ask questions and communicate prior to offers or purchase, we don't want any surprises upon arrival and please note we don't do returns.

As it sits, the guitar tunes up, holds well and has light to moderate fret wear. The back of the neck has plenty of dings, grooves and wear. It has moderate fret sprout. The body looks solid for the age, the saddle is shaved low and the pickup is tested, working and sounds great. In my opinion it sounds fantastic and has all the qualities I hear people give these old Martins. It has plenty of player wear, cosmetic wear, scratches, scuffs, dings, and repairs and I really enjoy playing it.

The case is a modern aftermarket dreadnaught case, nice protection, good interior, good latches and a solid handle. It too has plenty of cosmetic wear.

All and all, there is something that age does to an acoustic that makes it just sound better to me. This one codes 1960 and has good playability, a full sound, plenty of sustain and all the dings and character make it look killer. Typically the older ones that look played to death are that way because they're the good ones.

Enjoy
