About This Listing

This is an incredible 1978 Gibson Johnny Smith, one of the most sought-after Gibson archtops. These guitars have a long and storied history, being one of the most popular "artist model" archtops the company has produced.

The Johnny Smith model is a 17" L-5 style body with a cutaway, a Super 400 headstock, either one or two mini-humbucker pickups, maple back and sides, a spruce top, a C shaped neck with a scale length of 25". This guitar is a single-pickup version.

A previous owner added an endpin jack to replace the mini jack that would have come underneath the pickguard. An endpin jack is much more practical for today's gigging musician. This guitar has also been refretted and there is a small repair at the player side strap button. Also included in the case is a full-sized humbucker with a pickguard that is routed for a humbucker in case the player likes the warmth of a full-sized humbucker. This guitar comes with the original hardshell case.

Product Overview
The Gibson Johnny Smith was a carved Spruce archtop hollowbody with a single mini-humbucker, most commonly finished in Sunburst, though a Natural finish was also available (and adds significant value to vintage specimens). Pre-1979 specimens will have a trapeze tailpiece with a Johnny Smith name as opposed to the later "fingers" tailpiece.

A two-pickup version was also made known as the Johnny Smith Double.
