Everyone knows the magic of Japanese fenders, now add this insane flamed top and neck!! The special MIJ models like these pushed the limits past what American models offered, hence why MIJ models are some of the most sought after. They often look and play better than their American counterparts, and this is a perfect example! Weight is 9.3lb, and the serial number dates it between 1994-1995 and it comes with a TKL hard case. Was just set up and fully checked out by my luthier at Balkun Guitars.
The fretboard is a rich, dark rosewood and frets are in good condition. The bass plays great all over the neck and sounds amazing, especially with the upgraded EMG pickups and preamp which costed about $400 + installation. It has a EMG BQC preamp which is extremely versatile, allowing you to customize the slope of the high frequencies with two DIP switches in the control panel. Controls are: 1) Master Volume, 2) Blend (w/ center detent), and then two stacked knobs giving you 3) bass/treble boost/cut and 4) mid bost/cut + mid frequency select to choose what is boosted or cut between 100-1000 Hz.
The action is nice and low, there is no buzzing from the frets, and the neck has not moved since the initial setup. I do keep my place at 70 year round, so that helps obviously. Hold onto this one for the long haul and it will keep going up in value like all the other special MIJ basses are holding their value like crazy. Doesn't hurt that it also plays like a dream.
