About This Listing

Here's a very rare Sovereign guitar with original "tree of life" inlay in the fretboard. Very good condition and very playable, though the buyer may want to have it set up to his/her preferences. Normal wear and slight cracks as shown in the pics.

The cracks seem to be very old and stable. Locations are:

One on right side

One on left side

One on back

Two on top - one on the bass side and one in the middle at the bridge

The width of the lower bout is approx. 13-1/4 inches and the upper bout is 9-3/4 inches.

Width at the nut is 1-7/8 inches.

Scale length is 25 inches.

This guitar was likely made by the Oscar Schmidt company of Jersey City, New Jersey USA. Oscar Schmidt was considered a quality manufacturer in the day, and their Sovereign-labeled models were the nicer models. This example with a brass logo plaque would have been a top model.

Guitars from this era with the tree of life inlay are very rare. They represented the pinnacle of craftsmanship (and price) from the manufacturer and were therefore made in small numbers. Add to this the fragile nature of these instruments made 100 years ago. This guitar is somewhat of a time capsule.

It plays and sounds good, though the action is a bit high. There is plenty of saddle height if you want to adjust the action. The tone is very warm and intimate, like you would expect from a vintage parlor guitar, but it has a surprising amount of bass response.

Includes the newer hardshell case shown. It fits the guitar like it was made for it - like a modern Taylor case that is almost like a vacuum seal.
