Improved tuning for vintage-style mandolins, without giving up the authentic look.
We have completely redesigned our Golden Age mandolin tuners! Under the direction of StewMac's Don MacRostie, renowned mandolin maker, we've brought back classic features of tuning machines from the pre-World War II era.
The look of the old, the reliability of the new.
The look is more authentic than ever, but close-tolerance specifications, nylon worm bearings, and 15:1 gear ratio make Golden Age tuners smoother and more efficient than vintage machines ever were. Two optional relic finishes duplicate that "well-played" patina that makes most other modern tuners look johnny-come-lately on a vintage or reproduction instrument. The Loar-shape steel baseplates even have the same footprint and engraving as originals.
The details are 1920s too:
Old-style string post shape
Square worm supports
Straight-slot worm gear screws
Roundhead straight-slot mounting screws
Removable black or ivoroid knobs with vintage shape
Each set includes:
Pair of 4-left, 4-right tuning machines
Press-fit peghead bushings
Mounting screws
Gear ratio15:1
String post diameter0.236" (6mm)
String post spacing29/32" standard (23mm)
Required peghole diameter.336" (8.53mm)
Installation Tips
Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly drilled. Our Mandolin Peghead Drill Jig ensures precise 29/32" spacing.
Bushings: We recommend the #2061 Bushing Reamer (.328" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore for a professional job.
Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714
