Gretsch Model 6117 Double Anniversary Model Arch Top Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1962), made in Brooklyn, NY, serial # 50561, sunburst lacquer finish, laminated maple body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original two-tone grey hard shell case.
While not a particularly rare guitar, this PX-6117 is simply just about as nice as a Gretsch Anniversary model gets, almost incredibly clean and 100% original. The 1962 Double Anniversary was a midline model, more affordable than the Chet Atkins signature guitars or the high-end White Falcon and country Club. has the same basic body, neck, and feel as the 1950s Chet Atkins model 6120, but features two Hilo'tron pickups, (basically single coil versions of the Filter'tron humbuckers) and no Bigsby tailpiece. The round-backed neck is medium-chunky with a bound rosewood fingerboard inlaid with the "Neo-classic" pearl half-moons along the upper edge.
The single bound full-depth body has a fairly dark sunburst finish and large open F holes. The "Great Gretsch Sound" is provided by a dual Hilo'Tron pickups controlled by the standard '60s Gretsch rig: a volume knob on the lower bout for each pickup, master volume on the cutaway bout and pickup selector on the upper bout, along with a tone switch which most players usually ignore. The bridge is the "Space Control" unit mated to a "G" cutout tailpiece. Other hardware includes the standard Waverly single-unit tuners with metal buttons and the unique screw-off strap buttons, still a great idea that has never really caught on elsewhere. This early Anniversary is a very good player and easily the best-preserved early 1960's Gretsch we have seen in a while!
Overall length is 42 1/2 in. (108 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 5/8 in. (6.7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).
This lovely all-original 60+ year old Brooklyn Gretsch is about the nicest of these we have seen, at least for a long time. There is NO binding distress anywhere, which is increasingly rare on older Gretsch guitars these days. The guitar shows VERY light wear but no alterations; for the most part it shines like new. The finish remains VERY clean with just some tiny dings and scuffs; the back of the neck has one feelable scratch but no really notable play wear. There is one tiny sealed crack off the back end of the treble side F-hole, fairly discreet and not a structural issue. There are also a couple of small lamination cracks in the headstock veneer.
The neck has never been reset, the joint is completely solid and the angle good. All hardware is original and complete; the G string tuner is somewhat bent but works fine. The original small wire frets have some very light wear in the lower positions but the instrument plays very well. This is a superb guitar, really exceptionally well preserved for a 1960s Gretsch! It includes the original two-tone grey HSC showing some external wear but completely solid. This guitar is strung with flatwound strings for an authentic 1960s playing experience, with the original guarantee card (signed by Dan Duffy) still intact. Overall Excellent + Condition.
