I really appreciate an active boost circuit built on board the guitar to drive the pickups straight from the source.
.
I’ve had enough people ask me about a few tweaks to the classic Alembic “Stratoblaster” circuit, that I decided to make my own with these changes:
.
- An On/Off switch
- An on-board adjustable gain pot.
.
Most Boost circuits have a trim pot on the board itself to fine tune the level of “boost”. On this board, the sides are labeled “gritty” and “smooth” with the trim pot selecting the balance. Your surface mounted potentiometer focuses that balance & gives you full control of the level of boost while playing.
.
When rolled back to zero, there is a definite sizzle and heat to be had. Rolled halfway up fills out the sound tremendously with real grit coming through on single notes. All of this is with the trim pot at 50%, and even then this circuit provides saturation and break up that sounds convincing through even my lowly Roland Cube bench amp.
.
Cranked to full output, the Boost circuit is more than just enhancing the tone of your pickups - this is complete breakup. Like having a JFET pedal built in to your pre-output signal, the top mounted pot is an effects control at this point. And it all disappears at the flick of a switch.
.
Full kit includes Boost Circuit PCB, mini-DPDT switch, mini 50k gain pot & 9V power supply.
Wiring diagram included.
