Early 1970s Ampeg GE-500 Super Stud - OHSC - Very Cool
This guitar has worked hard. It needed a little help when it got to us. We cleaned the electronics and replaced the switch. Additionally we lubricated the truss rod nut and installed a new Tusq 43mm nut. We replaced the low E string tuner and one tone knob. It is currently set up with 10s and plays and sounds really nice. Funky. Mojo for days.
The guitar exhibits a lot of wear on its gold hardware. The Super Stud headstock decal is gone, replaced with a funky black panther cutout. We always leave this sort of thing. The Ampeg decal below that is nearly worn off. Elements are still visible however. The guitar has a less than professional binding repair on both sides of the 1st fret pictured. It's stable so we left it alone. There is some pretty uniform fret wear but the guitar does not fret out anywhere bending up a full step. Action is comfortable. The frets have at least one maybe two levels and crowns left in them.
The guitar is heavy for an SG type, having a laminated maple body and a trem. Substantial feeling. The Bigsby type trem works as it should and sounds cool. The gold Grover Imperial tuners are posh.
The original Maxon humbuckers read 7.5K on the neck and 7.53K on the bridge. Some of the best pickups ever to come out of Japan.
