About This Listing

This stunningly beautiful Candy Apple Red P4 Bass by Mike Lull (may he rest in peace) which he brought to the NAMM show in year 2001 (see photo, serial number below 500) is still in essentially showroom condition except for two small dings (see photos) and some tarnish on the tuning pegs (see photo). The bass shows almost no signs of wear or playing, and the paint is otherwise essentially flawless (the photos may show some flecks and reflections but those are not in the finish - just artifacts of the photos).

If you are reading this you probably know what Mike Lull's instruments are about, and this is an excellent example - the craftsmanship, balance and intonation are second to none, and the paint is gorgeous. The body is Alder with a graphite-reinforced Maple neck and Rosewood fingerboard. According to Preston Lull the pickup could either be Lindy Fralin or Duncan Antiquity, so we can't be 100% sure, but based on my examining photos of both, I believe they are not Duncans since those seem to have slight tapers at the tops of the pole pieces, which I don't see on these pickups.

The tone of the bass is classic P-bass "thump" with a strong midrange, so perhaps these pickups might be "overwound"? - based on my other Lull bass, I would say that Mike had a taste for bright, punchy-sounding pickups. The passive tone and volume controls are super smooth and musical.
The tuning pegs and bridge are early Hipshot. The bass weighs 9.4 lb according to my bathroom scale.

The bass comes with the original hardshell case, which is a lightweight, trapezoidal shaped, Mike Lull-branded Pro-Tec with reinforced walls, a black ballistic nylon exterior, and sturdy zipper closure, in excellent condition. It will be professionally packed and shipped by my local guitar shop.

The bass was set up recently by a world-class tech (Neil Young, Bob Weir, et al) with GHS Precision Flats Medium (45-105) strings, and the action and intonation are impeccable. I am only selling it because I have a dozen high-end basses and I just can't store and maintain them all - I have to make some hard choices.

Update 9Apr24: I have changed the "Condition" field from "Excellent" to "Very Good" at the request of a reader who points out to me that according to the Reverb guidelines a "ding" forces it out of the "Excellent" category. Yes, there are two "dings" on the bass, as excruciatingly documented here, but in my honest opinion the bass has no "play wear" or "pick marks" or other marks on it, such that IMHO anyone who looks at it without knowing a priori about the "dings" is never going to notice them and would not question that the bass is in "Subjectively Excellent" condition. Thank you to this reader for pointing this out, as I certainly do not want to misrepresent the instrument, but I'm just saying.
