About This Listing

Elk Bass 400 Vintage Precision Bass Type / Black, Short Scale, Late 1960s - Early 1970s

***High quality construction & super cool vintage vibe***

Elk instruments have a reputation for high quality build.

They are probably better known outside Japan for their amps. They built all Fender's Japan amplification from the late 70s/early 80s.

I also have a cool solid state Elk guitar amp for sale here on Reverb. Indeed, my main bass amp for home use is a cool old early 70s Elk bass combo which still sounds great.

This bass probably hails from around 1967-68 but since catalogues of the time are hard to come by I can't swear to it. Late 60s/Early 70s is safe.

Body is in nice condition for its age - some scratches & bumps to the black finish - mostly to the back - some basic touching up is evident - nothing to do with me! (See photos)

But no repairs or structural issues. Original tuners and pickups.

The neck is in very good shape and plays beautifully. It has a very solid and chunky feel - Musicmaster this ain't! Frets have some wear but nowhere close to re-fret territory.

Though superficially Precision-like the two designs have little in common. For a start it has 18 frets (short scale) but the scale is actually longer than the average short scale bass. (Close to 34")

As a result it really doesn't feel or sound like a short scale.

In addition, the design and placement of those pickups give off some really authentic vintage 60s/70s tones.

Overall an increasingly rare and high quality vintage MIJ short scale bass that deserves a good home.

A Note On Shipping:

We want you to be fully satisfied with everything - from the item itself (naturally!) through the shipping, packaging, communication etc.

Of course there is nothing we can do about customs duty, local taxes etc at your end. But we can keep the overall price as competitive as is decently possible.

The Japan post office service (EMS) is reliable and efficient but shipping costs from Japan to Europe or the states are unavoidably expensive.

For this reason none of the shipping costs we quote reflect the actual price we have to pay. We are more than willing to take a hit on that to make things as attractive for you as possible.

Vintage Instruments & Equipment

Shipping by air plus climatic changes can affect how a guitar is set up - no matter how well it is packed. Consequently there is no guarantee that an instrument arrives with exactly the same set up as stated. After a period of acclimatisation, you may still need to make any adjustments at your own expense.
