The original 80’s Fender-Japan - 'Katana' !

This rarely seen model was made for a very short period of time, in the mid 1980s as a response to the exotically shaped guitars marketed by Jackson, Dean and Kramer.

The venerable Dan Smith - Head of Fender Marketing was assigned to design Fender’s answer, and he came up with one of the most unique models in the long and illustrious history of Fender. Due to the very limited production period this unique model is now extremely rare, and hard to find !

A triangular body with a 24.75” scale glued in maple neck, with a 22 fret bound fingerboard, capped with rosewood, and in keeping with the body shape, the fret markers are triangular.  It features a string clamp, an arrow-head-shape headstock, and a neck, which is very fast and smooth that matches the body colour. The guitar is  fitted with a pair of open-coil humbucking pickups with master volume and tone controls. The pickups are accessed through the 3-way pickup selector.  It also had a 2-point Fender ‘System I’ locking tremolo unit. (tremolo arm present)

The finish is positively glossy, and rich save for some very light surface polishing swirls. Cosmetically, having been lovingly cherished and played, the guitar does present with some handling marks, and playing imperfections, but absolutely no rash, as can be seen in the condition photos.

The guitar is paired with its equally uber rare fender fitted case.

The guitar has been recently serviced by our independent luthier with the truss rod working, neck relief set, fretboard cleaned, restrung and with all electronics working perfectly.

This instrument is strung with hybrid gauge 9-46 strings. The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set to Gibson’s recommended playability settings by our independent luthier, with moderate relief. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements.

Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description. We are happy to provide additional photos on request.

An extremely rare opportunity to purchase; new to market in nearly 40 years, a fine, high quality Fender – Japan made instrument, with very unique boutique build quality aspects.

Highly desirable and sort after by ‘Collectors’, ‘Investors’ and discerning ‘Stage Players’, significantly appreciating in value over the past few years due to the very limited propduction period that has resulted in few examples coming to market.

Not just a great guitar but a stage head turner, and a very sound investment piece !
