About This Listing

1990 Made in Japan '54 Reissue Stratocaster. These are excellent era correct Strats that capture the '54 look and feel at a fraction of the price of even the USA reissues. This one was played all over SoCal before the original owner passed 5 years ago. I purchased it from his nephew and besides being serviced its been kept as is. The guitar is completely original besides the strap buttons. The era correct appointments include the 2 tone sunburst, circular string tree and soft V neck shape. The body is also routed correctly with the SSS pickup routes not the universal pool route. The rear cover is missing - I do have one from another guitar I can include if you’d like, I just left it missing. You can see this also has the big trem block, that was stock with these. As said it's been played and features some real road wear. While everything is structurally sound the body has some dings and dents. There is 1 chip on the backside that's not damaged the wood, that's the only chip. Lots of dings and dents and also some scratches but presents well overall. The 2 tone sunburst looks great and I believe the body is a 2 piece with the center section right in the middle. The neck as said has a soft V shape and feels super comfortable. It has smaller frets that do show some wear but nothing that hinders playability or needs addressed right away. While they are small vintage wire they have plenty of meat to them and the action is comfortable and plays well up and down the neck without fretting out. The neck has a truss rod adjustment at the heel via a screw driver , like the old Fenders. The neck also has a pencil date of 2/22/90, the serial dates it to 1989 but it was obviously finished early 1990. The neck has a gloss that's broken in feeling. The bottom edge under the high E string has had the finish played through completely down to the raw wood and feels great, lots of finish is worn off on the edge of the neck and a little on the fretboard, as said it was a well played guitar. When this guitar was new it was replicating a 36 year old 1954 Strat at the time and now it is 34 years old itself. It's been fully serviced recently and is well set up with GHS 10's on it.

These MIJ reissues are vintage now and commanding good prices. I do not have a case for it but it will be well packed with bubble wrap and packing paper.

Product Overview
The first era of Fender Japan began in 1982, when domestic market Japanese Fenders started rolling out of factories. While Fender Japan is popularly known for some of their more extravagant aesthetics, the bulk of domestic Japanese production was focused on reissues of historic American Fender models. These reissue models were labeled by a two letter/two number model code for the model and reissue year, followed by a suffix that indicated the price in Yen, and any unique specifications the model had. While a given model might come in a variety of price points during a given model year, from entry level to the near Custom Shop quality of Fender Japan's ExTrad series, all the models would broadly follow the aesthetic and technical specifications of the original American models. Reissue models would follow this naming convention until 2015, when Fender Japan revamped their product line to more closely mirror the organizational structure of the Mexican and American made Fender lines. Models on this page represent the 1982 - 2015 era of Fender Japan production, and typically feature the old style Fender Japan serial number at the base of the neck, as opposed to the contemporary "JD-" serial number format found on the back of the headstock. The original model codes (and frequently the value suffix) can usually be found in the neck pocket of the body, and at the base of the neck where the mounting holes are.
