About This Listing

Up for sale, a 2008 Pepe Romero Jr. classical guitar #133 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Born into a lineage of master classical guitarists (his father and namesake widely considered one of the 20th century’s finest players), Pepe Romero Jr. was always surrounded by instruments of the highest quality. He built his first guitar at age 18, going on to study with master luthiers including Miguel Rodriguez, J.L. Romanillos, and Edmund Blochinger.

This particular instrument features a ladder-braced spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back and sides bisected by a select Italian flame maple strip, and a mahogany neck capped by a slab ebony fingerboard. This guitar has exceptional sustain and a crisp, immediate treble response. The lows are warm and focused, and there’s a dulcet, harp-like midrange character. The instrument has a notable dryness and woody, percussive cut, with a 14 1/4“ lower bout width. Featherweight at just 3lbs 3oz, this Pepe Romero Jr. has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with normal tension strings and comfortable classical action.

The mahogany neck has a substantial D-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders, measuring .870” at the 1st fret and 1.005” at the 9th. On the ebony fingerboard, the slender fretwire is pristine, and this guitar plays cleanly up the 652mm scale with a straight neck. The hand-carved bone nut measures a full 2” in width. The slotted headstock sports a Brazilian rosewood veneer, and the strip tuning machines turn smoothly.

The Brazilian rosewood bridge sits flush with the top on all edges, and the bone saddles has modest room for future adjustment. Action at the 12th fret currently measures 10/64” on the bass side and 7/64” on the treble side. The spruce top has a multi-ply rosette, and the body is framed by maple purfling. Visible through the soundhole, the original label is dated to 2008, signed by Pepe Romero Jr., identifying this guitar as #133.

The bookmatched grain of the Brazilian rosewood back is bisected by a bookmatched strip of deeply figured flame maple, highlighted by the French polish gloss finish. Cosmetic wear includes a number of minor scratches and tiny dings on the body as a whole, with a concentrated area on top along the strum path. Additionally, there’s some limited, light buckle rash central to the back. The smooth satin finish on the neck profile is nigh flawless, with a scant few shallow nicks along the profile length that are imperceptible to the palm.

The original hardshell case is included.
