Up for sale, a 1988 ESP 400 Series model T-454 in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and an ESP strap. The 400 Series guitars were crafted in Japan during the ‘80s (sometimes assembled in limited quantities in New York), featuring top-notch fit and finish work and faithfully capturing the look and sound of their American counterparts. This particular T-style guitar features a solid alder body and a one-piece maple neck with a V-shaped profile carve.
The tonewood complement yields a balanced, immediate acoustic response that is faithfully captured by the LH950 single coil pickups. These pickups deliver plenty of quintessential Tele shimmer and twang, with chewy, sparkling bite at the bridge and fuller bell-like tones at the neck that remain articulate. This ESP weighs 8lbs, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The one-piece maple neck has a medium depth soft V-shaped profile carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges and ideal heft, gaining a hair more roundness in the upper registers, measuring .850” deep at the 1st fret and .940” at the 12th. The fretboard has a modern 9 1/2“ radius, and the slender fretwire exhibits wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-11 that becomes progressively lighter approaching the octave. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the bone nut measures just shy of 1 11/16” in width. On the headstock, the Kluson-style ESP-branded tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, and the “Made in Japan” text is present on the back of the peghead. The neck heel and pocket retain the factory model information.
All of the electronics function as intended, with a standard Tele-style control configuration, and the original full-size Japanese pots date to January, 1988. The chrome-plated hardware is all notably clean, including the dome-topped knurled knobs, control plate, and six-saddle bridge. Plastics comprise the switch tip and five-screw one-ply white pickguard.
This is an exceedingly well-kept guitar, with cosmetic wear on the gloss Olympic White finish limited to just a scant few pinhead-sized dings and faint scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole. The smooth gloss on the neck profile is immaculate.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included, along with an ESP-branded strap.
