About This Listing

Today, Lawman Guitars is Presenting…

A really cool 1960 Danelectro Model Number 3412 Shorthorn Bass WITH the Original Hard Shell Case!

Be sure to check out the video demo we did for one of thse awesome bass guitars. Not the same one but the same era and model.

These basses are very cool and usually they are pretty worn. This one was no exception. Somewhere in its history, some player thought it was a good idea to paint the top red and redesign the headstock. Yikes.... We were able to get 99% of the red off of the top and sides and it looks pretty good now. It had all the original parts so that was a plus but why they redid the headstock is anyones guess. No logo left on the headstock. We left that alone. The original Bronze Copper is still on the back, some on the headstock and the original Tape Binding on the side is still nice and tight. Original Back plate that still matches the Bronze Copper. Looks pretty good now and it plays and sounds great!!!

Anyone that has had one knows how much fun they are to play and they play them to death….The frets on this one are still in great shape. Dings, scratches and some sanding thru the finish in a few spots...oh well... What a cool bass…

As nice as it looks, it sounds great. The three way switch allows you to set a couple other tone settings which makes this singe Lipstick Pickup work really well. The sounds are pretty similar.. The action is low and it plays like butta! What fun. It’s a short scale neck but given the location of the the tailpiece you still get a 30 inch scale neck length out of it. The nut measures only 1 11/16 inches. Guitar players love these. The necks are not hard to manage at all. Only weighs 5 lbs 14 ozs so it won’t wear you out after a 4 hour gig!

These were made from 1958 thru 1966. I opened the pickguard to check the pot dates. See pic 10. 1960 from the pots and the serial number also dates it to 1960. Only offered in Bronze Copper. Top and back made of Masonite with a wood frame. Very unique design for the 1960's and still reissued today!! Grab an original. You won't be sorry!!

Of course, who could forget the Bass Player from That Thing you Do! Movie. He played one of these and brought back many memories for me of lots of bass players I played with back in the 1960’s that had these cool basses!

Here’s what Vintage Guitar Magazine has to say about these cool bass guitars.

The company’s first four-string electric bass was the model 3412 Short Horn, introduced in late 1958. Sporting a copper finish and a white “seal” pickguard (per its silhouette when horizontal), the instrument’s neck had only 15 frets (joining the body at the 13th fret), and a short scale, which meant that between its light weight, smaller fretboard, and scale, it was easy to play, especially for converted guitarists.

In the vernacular of guitar collectors, its headstock silhouette is known as the “Coke bottle” shape, and the small metallic label on the headstock (just above the nut) proclaims the instrument is “Totally Shielded” (against interference from fluorescent lights, electric motors, etc.).

The Short Horn 3412 was only available in a bronze finish, which was also applied to as the six-string model 3612.

As cool as the bass is, check out the original Danelectro Hard Shell Case! WOW…you just don’t see these offered ever and with the original bass, what a pair to own! It’s as nice as the bass. The exterior shows its been moved around over the years but all the latches, hinges and original handle are still there and working great. The RED PLusH Interior is just beautiful. Even the accessory box is still operating with this case!

Sold as is no returns. Its used and vintage. Thanks for respecting that.

Product Overview
The Shorthorn Bass (model number 3412) was produced by Danelectro using a Masonite body. This bass has a short-length neck, however, since the strings extend to the bottom of the body the scale is actually closer to full sized.
