The ASAT Classic Custom has been gone from the standard catalog for many years, and its lack of popularity has always been a mystery to us. This particular example has the pickguard delete option, which gives it a very clean look and shows off more of the nice swamp ash grain. Not only good looking, the sweet top end and slightly scooped midrange Swamp ash is a very nice pairing with the MFD pickups.

G&L's large MFD neck pickup has a glassy quality that is clean and articulate with a nice slightly hollow Strat tone on the upper frets. But it's broad frequency response and strong low end makes it very versatile, and it can easily mimic a rounder Tele or even a Jazzmaster-ish vibe. Roll off the tone control, and it takes on a warmer character, without losing note definition and clarity. The MFD is not just different, it's a real improvement; and the ASAT large MFD is one of the sweetest and most versatile neck pickups available in any guitar. 

The ASAT Classic bridge pickup is a Jekyll/Hyde affair that will go toe-to-toe with many humbuckers. Played clean it is sparkly with plenty of twang on tap, and any icy tendencies are tempered by the even mannered response of the Swamp Ash body. There is more midrange and body than a traditional Tele pickup, and overall it's a richer sound but with all the traditional flavors packed in there. Add your favorite gain pedal and this pickup becomes an awesome classic rock machine with plenty of harmonic complexity, and great sustain aided by the string-through body and brass saddles. It's truly great lead pickup; more articulate than a humbucker, and enough bottom end to lay down tight defined rhythms. Remember, most of the early Led Zeppelin was all on a Telecaster, so with the ASAT you can play hard rock...or a square dance.

The ASAT Classic Custom is a happy accident that is still one of our favorite ASAT's (along with the Bluesboy 90, but that's another story). With special models like this typically reserved for the Custom Shop, this is an unusual and affordable gem.
