About This Listing

This is a crazy cool guitar with a story. I bought it from the second owner. He bought it from a high school buddy in 1968. It was just a year old when he got it. He played it through high school and when he went into the Coast Guard. He was jamming with some fellow Guard members in a parking lot with a Pignose Amp in about 1972 when he dropped it, breaking the neck comprehensively. More than just a normal headstock break. His Uncle, who ran a music shop in Northern Wisconsin, shipped it back to Gibson in Kalamazoo to see what could be done. Gibson put the original hardware on a a new (1973) neck and body, and installed a Tune-O-Matic in place of the original lightning bolt bridge at the owners request. Find another SG Special with a factory Tune-O-Matic! No repairs or damage since the rebody. Finish is in spectacular closet queen condition. I think he was traumatized by the accident and barely played it after that. I have a letter telling the story that will be included.
As a guitar, it is a killer. Low, fast action. Early Santana and Townsend tones flow out. P-90's rip. Approx 8.1k Ohm bridge, 8.3k Ohm neck at the output jack. Original Vibrola Arm included.

Will be shipped in a late model case.

Product Overview
The Gibson SG Special was introduced in 1961 as a "mid-level" guitar. This set-neck mahogany guitar was a step up from the SG Junior with a pair of P-90 pickups, three-way switching, individual volume and tone controls, and a bound neck with dot inlays.

1966 saw a slight redesign of the SG Special, introducing a larger pickguard that went across the pickups and mid-way through the upper bout. 1966 also saw this model get the Vibrola tailpiece as standard, though stoptail models trickled out until early 1967.
