Boss DS-1 made in 1987
The DS-1 Distortion is a true icon in the world of guitar effects, utilised by artists from Kurt Cobain to Robert Smith to Glenn Frey and back.
This second MIJ incarnation of one of the leading guitar drive pedals is acknowledged to make all levels of guitar players sound better by fattening up and compressing their sound. Perhaps one reason the DS-1 is the top-selling BOSS compact pedal ever.
Boss’ first distortion pedal defined a bold new sound, delivering hard-edged attack and smooth sustain that’s been a staple for generations. And this Japanese-made black label iteration has a notably thicker, smoother, and more dynamic tone than later iterations. The circuit is untouched with the original Toshiba TA7136AP pre-amplifier. The old Toshiba preamp doesn't push quite as hard as later models, with the benefit being a warmer and smoother distortion that's really more of an overdrive.
This particular pedal has a few bumps and scrapes consistent with being used and nearing 40 years of age.
The circuitry is all original however the one mod is that this pedal at some stage has had the Tone and Distortion pots and knobs replaced with same value splined shafts units. This has made no noticeable change to the sound as expected.
