1890s Joseph Bohmann Bowl Back Mandolin
When Joseph H. Bohmann founded his musical instrument manufacturing business in 1878 he described himself as “The World’s Greatest Musical Instrument Manufacturer”. He claimed the title, and backed it up with a reward of $125,000.00 for any other manufacturer who could prove him wrong. He also advertised a lengthy list of international awards received from nations around the world attesting to the superiority of many of his instruments, among which were violins, mandolins, and guitars, although he is best known for the plethora of harp guitars that he produced.
This late 19th century bowl back shows elegant workmanship and excellent attention to detail. From its uniquely regal looking peghead to the crown shaped tailpiece, every facet of the Bohmann design bespeaks of the pomp and ceremony of his native Czechoslovakia. The instrument plays easily, and has that sweetness of tone that is preferred by the classical mandolin players of today as well as those of over 100 years ago.
The rare mandolin is in fine original playing condition despite having several nicks, scratches and scuff marks attesting to enjoyment it has brought to players over the last century.
