DIY Ela M251 2014 - Silver

Here is an Excellent DIY Ela M251 that was made from a Vintagemicrophonepcbkit.com D-251 PCB I purchased a couple of years ago. When I bought I wanted to have Tim Campbell's capsule, as well as a few other components installed. I ended up purchasing the Capsule from Tim and sending it to Chad at Signal Art, who installed the Capsule for me and "cleaned up" a few things on the install. We ended up swapping the transformer and a couple other parts to get it closer to a vintage 251. This is actually THE Mic that is the "Example mic" on the Vintagemicrophonepcbkit.com site, as well as the mic that is used in the instructions thread of the GroupDIY site.

My understanding is that Warm Audio had Vintagemicrophonepcbkit.com provide the PCB's for their 251, with some changes to the floating PTP Hi Z section, and If I am not mistaken Stam also uses thes PCBs for his microphones. The difference with these mic's are going to be component choice and some small configuration choices. Warm chose to alter the configuration slightly to allow for mass production, where Stam went with a configuration to optimize the performance. My mic has one of the best, if not the best, Capsule's available as well as a few personal choices to get it to as close to the sound of an Original as was able. There are GREAT examples of this Mic available from a few really nice manufacturers...FLEA, Upton, Telefunken USA and of course BOCK...Even GA has a version as well as Universal Audio taking over for Bock.

There are many versions and many great attempts. I opted for this particular version because of it's history, being the actual mic built for Vintagemicrophonepcbkit.com as their exaple. I am a fan of their PCB's and also have a D-47 I built. Vintagemicrophonepcbkit.com is very well respected in the DIY community and, as i mentioned, have provided boards for a few manufacturers
