About This Listing

21.5 inch scale length

17 frets

12 inch head

Walnut rim, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard

Here is a historic banjo with a very unique double rim design. Like many banjo manufacturers, Yosco graded his banjos based on how fancy they were; Number 1-4.

This No. 3 is pretty fancy with a figured walnut rim, multiple colorful bindings on the neck, headstock, and rim. It sports an ebony fingerboard and headstock overlay with lovely pearl inlays. The double rim and 12 inch head give this little guy a big sound! The neck is straight and it was recently strung with La Bella medium gauge silver wound strings which gives it a slightly more mellow tone. There is some wear on the frets, but no buzzes or rattles. The tuning machines still work great and the banjo is in good playing condition. It has a non original tailpiece

In 1918 Lawrence Yosco was granted a patent for a “double internal resonator” called the “Yosco Double Rim,” as seen on this banjo. Basically this consisted of a regular outside rim doubled by a second internal rim about 6″ smaller in diameter. The banjo’s head rests on both rims, making it an “archtop” instrument; the resonator is formed by a rounded piece of wood attached to the bottom of the two rims, forming a hollow sound chamber.

Yosco Double Rim banjos hit the market just in time for prohibition and the “jazz age.” Except for the guitar-necked Colossus, virtually all Yosco banjos are either tenor or plectrum; There has been a fair amount of conversion on them, with later five-string necks being added.

Serial # 407

Comes with original hard case in great condition. Non original handle.

From Presto, The American Musical Trade Weekly. February 1920:

YOSCO BANJOS ARE NEW TYPE The L. Yosco Manufacturing Company, Inc., 204 West Thirty-fourth street, New York, is making a double-rim banjo, so constructed as to increase the resonance and carrying power and also the quality of the tone...L. Yosco has traveled all over the country with the big musical shows as a great banjoist and guitar soloist, playing eighteen strings...
