Traditional indian hand drum used in Dholak, Karnatak, and other folk music.

Very handmade and obviously pretty old. I don't know it's provenance, but it's been in the family since the 80's at least. Two heads, roughly 9 & 12 inch (see photos). To my ear they sound pretty good. The larger head is tighter and higher pitched than the smaller one -- I believe this is the traditional arrangement, with the smaller head being intentionally looser for pitch bending.

Drum body is made of a solid piece of lathed wood. These were often made from jackwood -- the wood of the jackfruit tree, but it could possibly be teak or neem -- hard to identify the wood very closely, because they just aren't making stuff out of the same stuff they were fifty years ago. Whatever it is, it's a perfect peice of very dense tropical hardwood. I don't think it would even be possible to find such a thing nowadays.
