About This Listing

Hello and welcome to The House of chrome.

You are looking at a rare and highly collectible Shure G / 701A crystal model microphone made during the 1930's and it comes complete with a short cable and period Shure S34A model desk stand in which to display. This unique microphone was basically developed by Shure but the actual crystal element sold under license by The Brush Company who had been making excellent crystal mics for several years. This was an affordable "entry level" mic for that time as mics were not cheap by any means.

Pic # 2 shows this very mic in an old catalog along with a couple other Shure models.

This is honestly one of the rougher looking G mics I have seen but they don't come around very often and I'd rate it about average. It should be noted however that this mic has been tested and the crystal element no longer has any output so this should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only.

I was told that this mic was only manufactured for a few years making this one of the rarer and least manufactured microphone from Shure Brothers.

The G / 701A never changed it's design and had a conservative, masculine look with squared off edges compared to many other mics of that era but in the 1930's and was actually considered to be very modern and sleek.

The all metal body with polished chrome accents is quite lite weight despite being 4 1/2 inches tall. The mic is wired and has the original element inside. You can always put another element inside if you plan on using this mic though for historical purposes I would leave it alone. A Shure Controlled Magnetic element would be a perfect choice if you did however.

The Mic shows typical wear for an item of this age. The front and rear screens are free of any dents and the paint looks pretty good. It still has the inner black silk screens and the metal grills are free of any dents or tarnish which is a huge bonus. The original Shure badge is still on the rear of the mic and looks very nice. They would often fall off but this one still has it. The polished nickel accents on the mic look rough and have a lot of cosmetic wear as seen in the detailed pics provided.

It should be noted that the mic comes with 8 original screws to hold the screens on the body. The original screws on these 701A are usually missing a few...if not all but not this one. The little things that add value. A 12 inch cloth cable runs out the back side of the mic through the top of the stand and out the back end. It comes with an old female 1/4 inch connector. cable is soft, pliable and free of damage.

MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...

The stand is a good looking Shure S34A model desk stand with an all aluminum painted base and painted wood detachable riser with. This attractive stand really compliments the mic and makes for a stable platform. The stand is a 1940's era model and just a coupe years newer.

The stand is lite weight and in good overall condition. Base is free of any dents or fractures though there are obvious scratches and paint chips. The base and riser have original paint. The riser looks a bit nicer. The base has the 3 original pads on the bottom. The mic with stand is appx 10 1/2 inches tall X 4 1/2 inches wide.

You can see in pic # 8 that the riser twists off the base with a half turn allowing the user to walk around with the mic. These risers acted as handles back in the day as holding the mic with your hands was considered taboo.

This will make a nice display piece anywhere in the home, studio or office.

As with all my vintage microphones...
