This is a Gallagher model G-45 made in 1970. A small custom shop in Murfreesboro, TN, Gallagher started making small-batch guitars in 1965. They soon gained popularity when Doc Watson played one of their G-50 prototypes in 1967 and it eventually became his signature model. The first G-40 was built for Merle Watson in 1968 and later that same year was renamed the G-45. Solid mahogany back and sides, Sitka spruce top, scalloped X bracing, ebony fretboard and bridge, front and back black binding, B-W-B-W top purfling, unbound slight V neck, snowflake fret markers, 1-3/4" nut, 25-1/4" scale, Schaller tuners. I re-glued a brace and some cracks, added a few cleats, carved a new saddle and removed some side braces made from fiber tape that had disintegrated. I removed an old BB transducer pickup and installed a new strap button (reversible, if you want to re-electrify) .
This guitar has seen a lot of action and shows it with typical bumps and bruises, some cleated and stable side and top cracks, sound hole abrasion, fretwear and a top finish that's dull in places -- but tons of mojo, boy if guitars could talk. Plays easily with good action and a big, balanced sound. Comes in quality Martin-branded TKL hard shell case with some Tolex patches and touchups.
