1991 Fender Heartfield Elan I Antique Burst w/ Gorgeous Flame Top, Duncan Designed Pickups
Fender fanboys, we have a rare and unique guitar to share with you today! Fender Heartfield guitars were a short-lived sub brand of the world renowned guitar maker. They were only being made for a brief period from 1989 to 1993, in the Fujigen factory, alongside other MIJ Fender guitars. Headed up by a dream team of designers, luthiers, and engineers, the project was stacked with talent; John Page, George Blanda, and Jay Black, just to name a few. It was one of Fender’s first forays into building instruments designed for heavier music. The HH pickup configuration, intricately flamed top, three-per-side headstock style and set-neck construction represented a dramatic shift away from Fender’s wheelhouse. Ailed by unfavorable economic conditions, the project was ended four years after it’s start, but not before producing some very forward thinking and visually appealing instruments. They’ve been adopted by some high-profile rockers; namely Russ Parrish of Steel Panther and Fight, Vinnie Moore from UFO, and Jeff Pilson from Dokken and Foreigner.
This Elan I model is certainly no exception. It’s unique to other Heartfields in that it actually is branded “Fender”. The Heartfield name is nowhere to be found on this guitar. Perhaps it was an early model or even could be a prototype. The flame spans the full width of the top, a feature that is tough to find these days on guitars these days for anything less than a “Custom Shop” version, regardless of the manufacturer. The flamed carved top is reminiscent of a high end Les Paul, while the cutaways evoke the same feeling as PRS guitars of the highest prestige. Abalone dot inlays adorn the dark rosewood fretboard, and the look is completed with premium gold hardware and pearloid tuner buttons. We’re not sure if they’re original, but this model sports Schaller strap buttons, to keep the instrument secure. The original pickups have been swapped out for Duncan Designed humbuckers, as well. The models are akin to a Duncan ’59 in the bridge and a JB in the neck. They’re wired to a 3-way blade switch for blazing-fast pickup toggling.
Overall, the guitar is in very good condition! There are only a few small dings on the front of the guitar, the worst of with being a pea-sized ding on the lower horn. The back of the guitar has a larger gouge and a scratch. Functionally, the instrument is in tip-top shape. The frets have been dressed, and it’s been setup with fresh D’addario 10’s. The electronics have been cleaned for crackle-free operation. It plays super clean at low action and is both gig and studio ready! A hardshell case is included for safe transportation and storage.
Note: The missing truss rod cover has been replaced with a generic black cover, although it’s not pictured in the photos.
