About This Listing

Up for sale is a sweet 1971 Fender Competition Mustang in Competition Orange. This example features a MAY71B neck stamp, a pair of original grey bottom Mustang pickups with original pots and switches, original bridge / tremolo unit and hardware, original tuning keys and neck plate as well as original body routes. The pickup leads have been cut and then re-soldered at some point and there is evidence of touched up solder joints on the pots and wiring. The body finish has a slightly darker shade of orange than we typically see and has an interesting matte sheen to it. In general, depending on exposure to UV and the life a guitar has lived the shade of Competition Orange can vary greatly from instrument to instrument. The finish on the body of this guitar for all intents and purposes appears original, but also gives us a few question marks as the sheen is different than typically see as is the shade of orange. Nonetheless, a super cool vintage Mustang! Pro setup in house and comes complete with its original hard case.

Weight: 6lbs. 14oz.

Product Overview
The Vintage Fender Competition Finish Mustang set a new precedent for the world of electric guitars at the time of its introduction by combining the timeless cool of classic cars with a design aimed at the younger crowd. Smaller than its predecessors like the Jazzmaster, the Mustang was a heavyweight in the student-priced realm and offered a playing experience that's been coveted for years thanks to the pair of single-coils and iconic offset design. The last guitar Leo Fender designed while at his titular company, the slick racing stripe has been found in the rigs of David Byrne, PJ Harvey, and Thurston Moore.
