Jim’s double tops are among the finest in the world, and it has taken him years of experimenting and development to achieve this result. He mastered the construction of instruments following traditional models and began experimenting with new techniques and materials. Since then, his guitars have gained an excellent reputation worldwide. He now produces around 20 guitars per year in his home workshop. Redgate’s creations are the first choice for a growing number of professional guitarists such as Pepe RomeroAna VidovicOdair AssadSlava Grigoryan

Jim has been building concert guitars for nearly 30 years in Adelaide Australia. His guitars are rich with his own innovations and are extraordinarily unique instruments, creating a style and sound truly all their own. Rich beautiful tone, rapid responsiveness, and excellent volume instrument, which allows the soundboard to move more freely and results in a powerful, rich, even tone. The soundboard is thicker than that of a Greg Smallman, but somewhat thinner than a Fleta for example, and is supported by a highly refined carbon fiber honeycomb/lattice braced system.

Jim Redgates braced double-top guitars are light and resonant, powerful and responsive. They have a beautiful tonal character that is pure Redgate, reminiscent of Dammann but not a Dammann copy at all, instead, Jim has created his own unique and haunting sonic personality for these concert-level instruments.

The top is doubled, joined under vacuum pressure, and separated by a thin Kevlar material known as ‘Nomex’ usually. This double-top lattice braced guitar has a parabolic arched back and sides built with aged Rosewood. These double-top guitars have excellent sustain, and warmth, and complex ‘colors’ are present in the notes with resonances that harmonize beautifully due to the care with which Jim tunes the tops and the backs of his guitars by hand. This double top has an ebony fingerboard and a twelve-hole tie block. The Soundboard is master-grade Cedar. His instruments are among the best double tops in the world, they have to be experienced and played to see how your playing will improve with a quality instrument.

Jim has a build waiting list of three years, and Jim Redgate guitars have sold to players and artists all over the world over the past twenty years.

Concert artist Ana Vidovic says: “It is my privilege to announce that from now on, I will be exclusively playing an amazing guitar made by Jim Redgate. The sound had so much power and beauty and that it was so easy to play. I felt like I could just make music and not worry about the projection. This guitar has it all.

Jim Redgate was born in London in 1963, and his family migrated to Australia in 1966. His father was a craftsman and imparted him with many woodworking skills from an early age.

At the age of 19, he decided to build his first guitar. During that time, he was studying music and theory at college, which gave him the necessary skills after a year to enroll in a Certificate of Music Performance course. He completed this course in 1985 and was accepted at the Elder Conservatorium of Music to pursue a degree in Performance. He graduated with high marks in 1988. Throughout his studies, he performed on guitars he had built himself in numerous solo and ensemble concerts, even winning a study scholarship.

His skills as a guitarist enable him to assess instruments competently from a player’s perspective, which is crucial for crafting good instruments. After finishing his studies, he decided to make guitar building his profession. Initially, he supported himself through instrumental teaching until he became a full-time guitar maker in 1992.

He mastered the construction of instruments following traditional models and began experimenting with new techniques and materials. Since then, his guitars have gained an excellent reputation worldwide. He now produces around 20 guitars per year in his home workshop. Redgate’s creations are the first choice for a growing number of professional guitarists such as Pepe RomeroAna VidovicOdair AssadSlava Grigoryan.
