About This Listing

Vintage 1956 Les Paul Jr. to 1959 Standard Conversion

The conversion was done by Brian Monty, an excellent Canadian luthier, who is well known for his Les Paul Jr. conversion work.

Beautiful nitro lacquer finish. The lacquer has nice finish checking throughout the guitar. The lacquer checking does not show up well in the pictures. The guitar top has nice flames, which show up in direct sunlight and the flames are more subtle in the shade.

Italian Mazzucchelli, cellulose nitrate Inlays. Silkscreened Les Paul Logo, MOP Gibson Logo, Ink Stamped S/N with correct 1959 font. The S/N of 9 1956 was arbitrarily used, since the original 1956 LP Jr, was refinished and did not have its' original S/N. I purchased the LP Jr at least 30 years ago. It had an old headstock repair, which has been stable with no issues. It is very hard to even see the repair.

Medium fret wire. Beautiful, original, dark, Brazilian fretboard, Nylon nut, ....

The neck is not real fat, probably closer to some 1960 burst profiles. Neck profile: Nut width: 1.65", 1st Fret thickness: .87", 12th Fret thickness: .91"

Light weight for a Les Paul at 8.44 lbs

Quality parts, that have been aged:

Older set of Duncan Antiquity PAF pickups (wound by MJ) with aged nickel covers, with M69 Butyrate pickup rings. IMO: these are excellent sound PAF pickups.

CTS 500k pots, Switchcraft switch with vintage style braided wire, Switchcraft jack, Luxe BumbleBee .022 ufd PIO capacitors

USA made ABR-1 bridge (non-wired), with nickel plated brass saddles, nickel plated thin thumb wheels

USA made Nickel plated, aluminum tail piece

Aged "Kluson" style tuners with aged tips

Aged Vintage style top hat gold knobs

MojoAxe: pickguard (1959 shape), M69 pickup rings, switch ring and jack plate

Note: In some of the pictures, the guitar had a different set of pickups. The guitar currently has and older set of Duncan Antiquity PAF pickups (wound by MJ) with aged nickel covers.

Product Overview
The practice of "converting" a first-run Les Paul from early-model to "golden years" specs began in the 1970s, around the same time that the Les Paul Standard had been discontinued in favor of the mini-humbucker Les Paul Deluxe models. With hardware changes (for instance, a trapeze or wraparound tailpiece swapped for the more desireable Tune-O-Matic bridge with stoptail) and routing the body for PAF humbuckers, crafty luthiers have been able to use genuine Gibson Les Pauls from the first run of instruments and bring them up to the more desirable specifications of the coveted '57 PAF-equipped guitars, and even to '58 - '60 "Burst" specs with a refinish or re-top job.
