About This Listing

An O sized guitar from 1923 with 24 inch scale. 14 inches at the lower bout and 10 at the upper bout. The inside is stamped Lyon and Healy, Makers, Chicago USA. The back of the headstock is stamped 'X' which stands for X bracing, an upgrade feature. In 1922 serial numbers for Washburn guitars started again with number one. At the same time, the new Washburn line designed by Walter Kirk was a departure from earlier designs and showed quite a lot of Martin influence. Some differences were the stylish smile bridge and the raised sound hole ring. This one is batch number 201. Also on the back of the headstock is stamped Washburn vertically, and a small patent pending stamp

The sides are of 3 ply in the back of two ply selected Brown mahogany rubbed to a doll finish and very attractive in appearance.

The neck is of natural finish Cedar.

The top is a fine selected Spruce providing a rich sonorous tone. The top and back edges are inlaid with black celluloid raised black celluloid trim around the sound hole. Black stripe down the center of back. Lyon and Healy improved bridge. The original ebony saddle has been replaced with a bone saddle. Ebony covered heel. White bridge pins. White and pin.

Convex ebony fingerboard, improve type, bound with black celluloid, pearl position dots (Including a 10th fret marker), bone nut, nickel-plated patent heads with black buttons.

The instrument originally came with gut, and now has extra light 10 gauge bronze strings.

This instrument has seen a lot of play over the last hundred years and has had some repairs. There are scratches on the top, that are not cracks. The bridge has been re-glued and at some point there was a trapeze tail piece and there is damage directly in front of the bridge, probably from a bad repair. The pickguard is not original. Overall, the guitar is in good condition with no major structural problems. The neck is mostly straight and the action is reasonably low. It has a wonderful tone that equals a single O Martin from the same era. It has a great vintage hard V neck. Truly a great bargain for a 100 year old vintage guitar.
