Electro-Harmonix has brought back the Dirt Road Special, a compact 40-watt amp with a 12" speaker. This reimagined version is more robust, with the internal components and design chosen for durability. Plus, there are four footswitchable reverbs (Spring, Plate, Hall and Reverse) culled from the Holy Grail Max, giving your tone added dimensionality. Sonically, the Dirt Road Special has a solid clean tone, but breaks up into a raw, natural overdrive that can be shaped with interactive Volume and Bite knobs. And naturally, it takes pedals very well.

Back around 1977, while some folks were watching Star Wars for the umpteenth time, others were cranking up their Mike Matthews Dirt Road Special — the brand new guitar combo amplifier from Electro-Harmonix. Named for its — in EHX’s words — “gritty funkiness,” this tiny brute employed a 4558 dual op-amp and six transistors to produce a surprisingly muscular sound. It boasted Volume, Tone, and Bite controls for dialing in your tone, along with a Color switch and built-in Small Stone phase shifter. The modern Dirt Road Special retains its predecessor’s sonic signature but eschews the seldom-used onboard phaser for the full gamut of reverbs contained in EHX’s Holy Grail Max pedal — and they’re footswitchable! It’s also been upgraded with modern enhancements for improved durability — a great idea considering that the original was notoriously temperamental (a number of the vintage models floating around are in some form of disrepair). So, grab a Dirt Road Special and add a classic array of raw, gritty textures to your tonal palette.
