About This Listing

We have what we feel is a very early example of a Lyon & Healy/Washburn open-back banjos, serial  number 584 in the dowel stick, which should put it in the 1890s.  It is a metal clad pot in the Boston style,  with a Maple neck with Ebony heel cap and Ebony fingerboard with decorative MOP inlay.  The tuners have been replaced with modern tuners with black buttons, a nice match for the heel cap etc., and some of the brackets have been replaced as well, otherwise it all appears to be original.  Currently strung with nylon strings, which seems appropriate for the build and the age and makes a great plunkey tone on the genuine skin head.  Great for frailing/claw-hammer styles.  It is in very good vintage playing condition with a straight neck and appropriate action, with plenty of room to adjust if desired. Comes with vintage case which may be its original in fair condition with many wear marks etc.
