About This Listing

Manuel Contreras Flamenco Guitar (1970s), made in Madrid, Spain, natural finish, cypress back and sides, spruce top; Spanish cedar neck with ebony fingerboard, period black hard shell case. This fine older Flamenco guitar is labeled M.G. Contreras, Calle Mayor 80 Madrid 13, Calle de La Cruz 3 Madrid 12. At the time Contreras was successful enough to run two shops in the city. Manuel Contreras Sr. (1928-1994) was a native of Madrid who acquired excellent woodworking skills at a very young age. This came to he attention of Jose' Ramirez III, who took him on as an apprentice in 1959. Within just a few years by 1962 Contreras learned the trade so well he was able to set up as an independent guitar maker on his own at number 80 Calle Mayor in Madrid. As with most Spanish luthiers Contreras' shop built varieties of both concert and Flamenco guitars. These latter are very well regarded and many notable Flamenco soloists have performed on Contreras guitars, in particular Juan Serrano who recorded several albums using this maker's instruments. This is an older mid-grade Flamenco, traditional except for the "modern" geared tuners in place of wooden pegs. It is very light with the typical cypress back and sides. There are tap plates on the top and a rosewood bridge. It was built in Contreras' shop but is not personally signed or dated by him. This is not a top-line performance guitar but a nice handmade Flamenco for general use.Overall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 11/16 in. (9.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 26 in. (660 mm.). Width of nut is 1 15/16 in. (49 mm.). This guitar shows some general wear but nothing too severe. There are finger marks around the bridge and lower tap plate area and general dings, dents and scratches overall. There are no visible repairs and the guitar plays very well with a sweeter sound than many Flamenco instruments, which are often optimized for projection. This pleasant and nicely aged in genuine Madrid made guitar reset in an original period US-made hardshell case. Excellent - Condition.
