1980s Tokai Hard Puncher PJ-55 Precision Bass 1980s Blackout Black
Made by Tokai Gakki in the early 1980s, the Hard Puncher series was Tokai's line of high quality bass reissues, one-offs and standard models. Some, like the PJ-55, were offered with custom appointments such as matching headstocks and custom hardware. This PJ-55 sports an absolutely all black everything finish; black hardware, black knobs, black neck, black everything. The finish The pickups certainly live up the name packing a serious punch, with the split coil pickup having a particularly overwound, driving tone. The black gloss neck is particularly comfy to play without feeling overly chunky.
Freshly setup and serviced with 45-100s, it's playing smoothly with a nice comfortable action and no dead spots. The pickups sound massive, the electronics work well and there are no structural issues whatsoever. The condition of the bass is good with some fairly heavy swirling and scratching to the body, however all is honest wear with a few dings and chips to boot. Frets are about 85% with loads of life left in them. The "Tokai" logo has a scratch through it which has damaged some of the finish. If you can live with the aesthetic wear, this bass is a real monster and capable of a huge variety of tones and genres. Comes with a gig bag!
